Here are additional details about the beer and spirit pairings discussed during this Portland Beer Podcast –
Grow A Pear – Breakside Brewery and Clear Creek Distillery : Breakside and Clear Creek are excited to present our pairing of Clear Creek Pear Brandy and Bricolage, a Belgian pale ale conditioned with Brettanomyces or “Brett.” The beer is extremely dry and effervescent with notes of leather, grass, and stone fruit. The soft sweetness of the brandy balances the dry, minerality of the beer and the beautiful pear notes enhance the aroma. This pearing, while served at a fest in February, will transport you right to a sun-bleached orchard in the late summer.
Strong Loving – Cascade Brewing and Thomas & Sons Distillery: This is a mulled sour beer with a local fernet, served warm with a touch of honey and orange. The robust cherry character of the Kriek holds up remarkably well to the herbal brightness of the Townshend’s Fernet. Let’s call it a humble symphony of aromas and flavor that goes a little something like “Da boom na da noom na namena”
Brother in the Bog – The Commons Brewery and Stone Barn Brandyworks : An unlikely but astounding combination of Common’s bourbon-barrel aged dark Belgian style ale with Stonebarn’s vibrant liqueur made from Oregon cranberries and Cabernet brandy. Rich toffee and dark fruits meets the tart tang of cranberry with very entertaining results.
Copperhead Fangs – Laurelwood Public House & Brewery and Vinn Distillery : Beer, Whisky, Beer. This snake won’t bite hard if you follow these simple instructions. Her back is patterned with four elegant malts balanced by a firm, bitter, underbelly. She drips a vanilla venom that will hypnotize your senses. A final flash of brown will leave you in another world of chocolate, coconut, and toffee. Succumb to the spell of the copperhead.
Black Bourbon Blast – Double Mountain Brewery & Taproom and Hood River Distilling : This pairing will have your taste buds travelling across the Atlantic. London dry gin meets Irish stout. Bold and bitter Irish nitro is joined by bourbon barrel aged gin for a flavor like a lightly roasted forest fire.
Citrus Ceremony – Culmination Brewing Company and Indio Spirits: Two varieties of citrus marry to complement the acidity with the sweetness of Curacao, this pairing is about contrast of acid and sweetness to maintain a balance.
